CLARION RIVER Words & Music by Elly Wininger I’d been driving all day on the interstate. I was tired, I was hungry, it was getting kind of late. So I took the next exit with the knife & fork sign And headed to the center of town. When I got to Main Street I walked up & down. Nothing was open. It was a real ghost town. Every store, every coffee shop, closed up tight. There wasn’t a soul in sight. So I got back in the car & rolled on. Then I discovered where the town had gone. Everybody was down by the Clarion River Jumpin' off the bridge by the “No Diving” sign. They were down by the Clarion River. Havin' a mighty good time. Well the kids were in the water, the teens were on the rocks. Folks were cooking on the grill, and fishin' off the docks. Playin' cards, drinkin' beer, and shooting the breeze. Some were tyin' up a rope swing in the trees. Everybody was as down by the Clarion River Locked up the shop, flipped over the sign. They were down by the Clarion River. Havin' a mighty good time. Someone saw my plates and waved a hello "Say you're not from around here, before you have to go We've got plenty of food, so get out of your car Come on over here & bring that guitar!" So I joined them down by the Clarion River, Picked a few tunes, shared a bottle of wine. We were down by the Clarion River Havin' a might good time. Everybody was down by the Clarion River Locked up the shop, flipped over the sign. We were down by the Clarion River. Havin' a mighty good time. Yeah, they sure know how to have a good time. Think I'll stick around and have a good time.

The Girl in the Tree House (Music & Lyrics by E. Wininger, E. Pittelman, S. Miller) 5:19 Orchestration: S. Miller ©℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI Grandpa’s woods were tall and dark. They made for us a world apart. A world where we could make believe. A world where we could dream. The tree house was a wondrous ship. The perfect place to start each trip To anywhere we’d care to go That only children know. Chorus And I was the girl in the tree house. And you were the boy who captured me . And time was a game, a magical game, in the tree house. The summers came and went so fast. Enchanted days that could not last. We grew up and moved away. Like some unfinished play. Goodbye to the girl in the tree house... Pirates and mermaids. Ladies and lords. Dinosaur hunters. Sashes and swords. Pink lady slippers. On the lawn it was Tuesday. In the woods there was no time. And now by chance we meet again. The years have changed us both, but then It seems that you remember too The innocence we knew. When I was the girl in the tree house. And you were the boy who captured me. And life's still a game, a magical game. In the tree house.

For Fred 03:58
For Fred (Lyrics & Music, E. Wininger) 3:58 © ℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI Thank you for getting me to dance. Thank you for getting me out on the floor. Thank you for getting me to dance. I'd forgotten that sometimes that's what music's for. It was a stretch- I think we both knew it. But just the same I wanted to do it. So thank you for getting me to dance. Thank you for getting me to dance. For getting me out from behind this guitar. Thank you for getting me to dance. And making me feel like I belonged in your arms. It was fun, and sexy, and freeing. I didn't care what others were seeing. So thank you for getting me to dance. Thank you for getting me to dance. Thanks for the twirls, the dips and the spins. Thank you for getting me to dance. And that look in your eyes when the band would begin. And though the music is slowing, and we both should be going I'm glad I took the chance... So thank you.... for getting me to dance.

Two Steps Forward (Music & Lyrics by E. Wininger, Arr. S. Miller) 2:56 ©℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI Two Steps Forward and one step back. Keep your mind open, stay on track. You can’t get further than where you’re at. Two Steps Forward and one step back. Two Steps Forward and one step back. Give it a rest, cut yourself some slack. It won't be long before you're back at bat. Two Steps Forward and one step back. Sometimes you’re gonna be side-lined. Sometimes you’re down for the count. That’s when you know you got to find time Take a deep breath, figure it out. -Chorus - Sometimes things will get you so down. Seems like you just can’t win. That’s a good time to slow down. Wait for the wheel to take another spin. -Chorus - When life has handed you a time out Just give it a rest. You’re not at your best. You never know what you might find out. There might be a precious jewel hidden in the mess. -Chorus-

Hard Livin' 03:40
Hard Livin', Soft Heart (Words & Music by Elly Wininger) ©℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI Well it’s hard livin' with a soft heart. You hide the tears, you play the part. You’ve had to drown the pain again and again. You’ve done some hard livin' with a soft heart. You put your life on the line to feed those kids. You did what you had to do. And sometimes the pressure put you on the skids It’s taken a toll on you. 'Cause it's hard livin' with a soft heart. You hide the tears, you play the part. You’ve had to drown the pain again and again. You’ve done some hard livin' with a soft heart. With your hopes on hold you took care of her. But in the end, she just couldn’t hold on. Now you stir through the ashes for the dreams that were And hope that the chance isn’t gone. 'Cause it's hard livin' with a soft heart. You hide the tears, you play the part. You’ve had to drown the pain again and again. You’ve done some hard livin' with a soft heart. And now you hear destiny’s call. Life has left you no excuses to stall. And you’re so afraid you might fall again. 'Cause it's hard livin' with a soft heart. You hide the tears, you play the part. You’ve had to drown the pain again and again. You’ve done some hard livin' with a soft heart.

Little Red Wagon (Music & Lyrics by E. Wininger) 3:39 ©℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI Well I thought we had a good thing. But you're off with somebody new. And I’m left here all alone In my Little Red Wagon, painted blue. Well you told me that you loved me With a love you said was true. But the truth is... you're gone. And my Little Red Wagon's painted blue. I don’t know how it happened. Was it something that I did? Or did you just grow tired of me And you kept those feelings hid? Well you never come around. But there’s nothing I can do. So I'll just sit here missing you In my Little Red Wagon painted blue. I don’t know how it happened. Was it something that I said? Or was it something that you thought That you kept inside your head? Well you never come around... But there’s nothing I can do. So I'll just sit here missing you In my Little Red Wagon painted blue.

I Say Love 04:28
I Say Love (Music & Lyrics by E. Wininger, Arr. S. Miller) 4:29 ©℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI If you want a life that you can order and explain If you’re only open to the joy, but not the pain And if you cannot hear the music in the rain Beware of love. But if you’re moved by feelings mysterious and wild That stir the ancient dust and resurrect the child If you’ll risk your safety for the magic of a smile Then I say love. There are no rules but those that you design, and then you break. For there's no telling what you'll do in love, for its own sake. And if you will surrender to the dance of give and take, Then I say love. Only love; only love, connects you to another soul. Only Love, only love, can make the wounded whole. So what is it in life that you were put here for? How many times will fear keep you from opening the door? Will you walk in trust though your steps may be unsure? I say love.

Let It Come 04:18
Let It Come (Lyrics & Music by E. Wininger) ©℗2017 Mestengo Music/BMI I’ve been holding on to these crazy dreams. When I grab I a piece it’s never what it seems. ‘Cause when you hold too tight the sand falls too fast So I’m loosening my grasp. -Chorus- And I Iive where the water flows. And I ride the river the way it goes. And of all the things I haven’t done, There is nothing left but to let it come. Well I’ve tried so hard, and I’ve tried so long. And all I’ve got to show is another song. So I’m giving up the trying part. What I’m left with now is the heart. -Chorus- Once you stop pushing the rock It’s so easy to get to the top. And that hill that you thought you should climb fades away in time... There’s a sweet release in the air. Gonna breathe it in, and stay right there. And the trees are talking in their secret code. There’s a stranger walkin’ up my road.

about

In the theater when they tell you to "Break a leg!" they don't mean it literally, but that is exactly what happened to me in the middle of recording this CD. Much to my surprise and delight, the unexpected delay produced a trove of treasures. With deadlines out the window and my leg in a brace, I had to slow down and sit back. I found myself delving into the minutiae of each song...the emotions, the notes, the lyrics, the arrangements, yielding what I believe is some of my best work to date - reflected throughout the CD in the songwriting, guitar arrangements and production. There are the blues songs- from traditional to a Bessie Smith tune, to my own take on the form, and songs with a Cajun feel, a country feel, and some R&B. And then there are the songs that defy neat categorization to say something that I needed to express. So, from lemons, I've concocted some really tasty lemonade. I hope you enjoy it!
